Release: Spring 2027 · Theaters

Spring used to be the quiet season between awards contenders and summer tentpoles. Not in 2027. From early March to Memorial Day weekend, the release calendar is packed with franchise returns, a long-awaited comedy sequel and the first live-action trip to Hyrule.

A quick note before spring even starts: Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew opens wide in theaters and IMAX on February 12, 2027, before streaming on Netflix from April 2. That is a first for a Netflix film, and worth putting in your calendar now.

Here are the six spring releases we are most excited about, in release order. All dates below have been announced by the studios; as always, they can shift.

Gatto — March 5

Enrico Casarosa, who directed Pixar's Luca, returns with an original story set in Venice. Mark Ruffalo voices Nero, a black cat in the city's criminal underworld who begins to wonder whether he is living the right life; Laurence Fishburne also stars. Disney moved the film up from June to early March.

The reason to be excited is the look. The teaser blends a hand-painted 2D style with computer animation, a real departure from the house style Pixar has refined for three decades.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 — March 19

Jeff Fowler, who has directed every film in the series, is back, along with Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Idris Elba as Knuckles and Keanu Reeves as Shadow. The new addition is Kristen Bell as Amy Rose, one of the best-loved characters from the games. Paramount's series has quietly become one of the most dependable family franchises around, and the third film's Shadow storyline raised the stakes.

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova — March 26

Legendary and Warner Bros.' MonsterVerse continues with a new director, Grant Sputore, whose debut was the tense sci-fi thriller I Am Mother. David Callaham wrote the screenplay. The human cast includes Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Stevens, Jack O'Connell, Delroy Lindo and Sam Neill. Pair it with Godzilla Minus Zero this November for a very different take on the same king.

Spaceballs: The New One — April 23

Forty years after the original, Mel Brooks returns as Yogurt, and so does Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet, alongside Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga and George Wyner. Josh Greenbaum directs from a script by Josh Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, and the new generation includes Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman and Anthony Carrigan. Amazon MGM Studios is releasing it in theaters. Moranis returning to the screen is reason enough; a fresh shot at parodying today's sci-fi franchises is a bonus.

The Legend of Zelda — April 30

Nintendo and Sony's live-action adaptation is directed by Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) and produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad. Bo Bragason plays Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth plays Link. Nintendo provided more than half the financing, and Sony handles worldwide distribution. The date has moved twice and now sits on April 30. After the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, expectations are sky-high.

Star Wars: Starfighter — May 28

Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) directs Ryan Gosling in a standalone adventure set about five years after The Rise of Skywalker, a stretch of the timeline no film has explored. Jonathan Tropper wrote the script, and the cast includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre and Amy Adams. Lucasfilm describes it as an entirely new adventure with all-new characters, which is exactly what the saga needs.

Our Pick

Gatto is the one we will be first in line for. A Pixar film that looks like nothing Pixar has made before is rarer than another trip to a galaxy far, far away.
