Five years after Dune (2021) and nearly three after Dune: Part Two (2024), Denis Villeneuve is ready to finish what he started. Dune: Part Three opens in theaters and IMAX on December 18, 2026, and it adapts Dune Messiah, Frank Herbert's 1969 follow-up to the original novel. It is the book where the hero's victory curdles into something far more troubling.

Here is everything that has been officially confirmed so far.

What It Is

Part Two ended with Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) seizing the imperial throne and launching his Fremen followers on a holy war across the known universe, while Chani (Zendaya) walked away in disgust. Messiah jumps years ahead. Paul is now emperor, the war fought in his name has spread far beyond Arrakis, and a conspiracy is forming against him from inside and outside his court.

If you have read the book, you know it is shorter, colder and stranger than Dune: less a war epic than a political thriller about a man trapped by his own prophecy. If you have not, we will keep it that way.

Who Made It

Villeneuve directs, and his regular collaborator Hans Zimmer returns to compose the score. The film is a Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary release. Production ran in the second half of 2025, with locations again in Budapest and Abu Dhabi.

Who Is In It

The returning cast includes Timothée Chalamet as Paul, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan and Jason Momoa, whose character Duncan Idaho was killed in the first film.

The major newcomers are Anya Taylor-Joy, who appeared briefly at the end of Part Two as Paul's sister Alia, and Robert Pattinson as Scytale, a shapeshifting Tleilaxu Face Dancer at the heart of the plot against Paul. Pattinson has described the character as someone whose loyalties you can never quite read.

Why It Is So Anticipated

Few modern blockbusters have been as consistently well reviewed as Villeneuve's first two Dune films, and Part Two in particular became a genuine large-format event. The trilogy also gives Villeneuve something franchise cinema rarely allows: a real ending, adapted from a book that deliberately undercuts the hero worship of the first.

The Big-Screen Plan

Large formats are central to the release. IMAX 70mm film screenings went on sale months ahead of time, and Deadline reported in April that some were already selling out. Warner Bros. and IMAX have scheduled "Dune Insider" screenings ahead of the official opening:

  • December 14: IMAX 70mm film screenings only, in a handful of theaters
  • December 15: expands to digital IMAX
  • December 17: opens in other premium large formats
  • December 18: wide release in theaters and IMAX across North America

Note that Avengers: Doomsday opens the same day, so if you want a premium seat, book early.

The Trailers

Warner Bros. released a teaser on March 17, 2026, and the full official trailer on July 8, 2026. Both are embedded on this page. The full trailer introduces Pattinson's Scytale and gives the clearest look yet at Paul's reign and the rift with Chani.

Should You Wait for It?

Yes, and plan for the biggest screen near you. If you need to catch up, Dune and Dune: Part Two together run a little over five hours; a December double feature at home is the perfect warm-up.
