Gifts for Movie Lovers 2026: Five Film Gifts, From a Meter-Long LEGO T. rex to Grogu Ears for the Dog

A holiday 2026 gift guide for movie lovers: five film gifts, each tied to a scene and a bit of history, from Jurassic Park's T. rex to the folk-painting tiger of KPop Demon Hunters and a Grogu costume for the family dog.

November 2, 2026 · 8 min read

The skeleton was always going to fall. As No Film School tells the story, the ending Michael Crichton and David Koepp wrote for Jurassic Park had Alan Grant use a crane to knock a dinosaur skeleton onto the raptors, with John Hammond finishing the rest with a shotgun. Then, with the crew already in the middle of the sequence, Spielberg changed his mind. Assistant director John T. Kretchmer recalled him saying, "I think we have to bring the T-rex back, the audience is going to want to see the T-rex," at a 25th-anniversary Q&A that No Film School reported, and the effects team had about a day to rig it.

I love that story because it's about a director listening to an audience that didn't exist yet. It's also how this year's gift guide came together: five presents for the person on your list who quotes movies at dinner (and one for their dog), and each one carries a scene with a small piece of history behind it that even a devoted fan may have walked past.

How These Five Were Chosen

I'm Dr. Hedgehog, and I write this site from Korea. I haven't built, hugged, filled or fastened any of these onto a dog. The picks rest on what can be checked: the makers' official specs, hands-on reviews from independent outlets such as Brickset, The Brothers Brick and BricksFanz, and launch coverage from the toy and collectibles press. Each one links to its Amazon page. I've left prices out because they change by the hour in December.

A Meter of Bones for the Jurassic Park Kid Who Grew Up: LEGO T. rex 76968

Jurassic Park (1993) – Official Trailer · Watch on YouTube

LEGO's Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex (76968) is the museum half of that ending, built from 3,145 pieces and rated 18+. Bre Burns of The Brothers Brick measured the finished skeleton at about 41 inches (105 cm) from snout to tail. It comes with Grant and Ellie Sattler minifigures, and Brickset's reviewer found amber-colored geodes with a trapped mosquito and a little frog sitting in a driver's seat hidden in the build. It's hard not to read that frog as a wink at the frog DNA that fills the gaps in the park's dinosaurs.

The reviews are honest about the cost of all that bone. Burns writes about "a little repetition and dullish color palette," and adds that the T. rex cannot stand on its own without its black support pillars. Brickset's reviewer calls the big neck joint strong but lists it as standing out "as unrealistic," and warns that the ribs get knocked out of alignment. Measure before you buy: this needs a long console table or a deep bookcase, not a standard shelf.

Give it to the grown-up who wore out a VHS copy in 1993 and now has a free weekend and a wall to fill.

The Thunderbolts* Took Over Stark's Old Building: LEGO New Avengers Tower 76352

At the end of Thunderbolts*, Valentina presents a crew of misfits to the cameras as "the New Avengers," and, as Rosie Knight sums it up at Den of Geek, they "take up residence in Avengers Tower as the city's newest crime-fighting team." There was never a LEGO set for that film. The Avengers: Doomsday New Avengers Tower (76352) is the closest thing, a 954-piece, 12+ building that Brickset lists at about 34 cm (13⅜ inches) tall, released October 4, 2026.

The six minifigures, as Adam White describes them at BricksFanz:

  • Yelena, which White calls "a far better take on the character" than her earlier LEGO version
  • Red Guardian, Bucky Barnes and Sentry (with two faces, for Bob's two moods)
  • a flaming Human Torch, which White calls "an amazing minifigure"
  • Doctor Doom, who arrives early for Avengers: Doomsday, in theaters December 18, 2026, according to Disney

My favorite detail is outside the front door: a trash can that White found stuffed with Mjölnir, Stormbreaker and Black Panther's claw, as if the new tenants threw out the old team's things. That one joke tells you more about the Thunderbolts* ending than any plaque could.

White is also clear about the downsides. The rooms are "rather small and difficult to access," the top-floor jail cell most of all, Bucky's head print doesn't suit the character, and Doom is identical in every Doomsday set, so a fan buying the whole wave will end up with a stack of him. This one suits a teenager who will pose heroes off the roof, or a Marvel fan who wants something on the shelf before December 18.

Peter Parker, Forgotten by Everyone Except Your Desk: Owala's Swing of Things FreeSip

Spider-Man's stories keep charging him for being a hero. Juan Diego Arriola Wundram at BamSmackPow points to the end of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002), when Mary Jane kisses Peter and he tells her he'll always be her "friend," "a heartbreaking rejection" meant to keep her out of his enemies' sights. This year's Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opened July 31, 2026, pushes the same bill further: in Sony's description, as The Cupboard relays it, Peter is "fighting crime full-time in a world that no longer remembers him."

Owala – Swing of Things and Night Watch Spider-Man FreeSip Bottles · Watch on YouTube

Owala's Swing of Things FreeSip wraps that lonely figure around a 32-ounce insulated steel bottle, in what The Cupboard describes as "a bold navy, red, and white palette with Spider-Man swinging across the bottle." Taylor Battle at The Pop Insider notes the 3D matte prints and the FreeSip spout, which lets you sip through a built-in straw or tip it back and drink from the wide opening. It launched as an Amazon exclusive on July 18, 2026, alongside a black Miles Morales version called Night Watch on the same listing, so check which design is selected before you order.

Two limits come straight from Owala's own product page and FAQ. The stainless FreeSip isn't meant for hot, carbonated or perishable drinks, and the brand recommends washing the steel body by hand to protect the finish, which matters when the finish is the whole point. Of these gifts, this is the one that leaves the shelf: it goes to class, to the office, to the gym, and it reminds someone of a movie several times a day.

A Tiger Out of a Korean Folk Painting: The Derpy Squishmallow

KPop Demon Hunters | Official Trailer | Netflix · Watch on YouTube

Derpy is the gift I'd most like to explain, because his goofy face is older than he looks. Story artist Radford Sechrist, who designed the blue tiger for KPop Demon Hunters, told Hanh Nguyen at Salon that he is "90% based on the minhwa artwork" and "10% is our cat." Minhwa is Korean folk painting, and Salon notes that satirical tiger-and-magpie pictures from the Joseon era drew the tiger as a fool, which is where the nickname babo horangi, "idiot tiger," comes from. Kim Ji-ye at the Korea JoongAng Daily explains the joke underneath: "In jakhodo, the magpie represents the common people and the tiger symbolizes the powerful." So when Derpy waddles through the film carrying messages between Jinu and Rumi, with Sussie the six-eyed magpie stealing his hat, he is carrying a few hundred years of Korean humor about the powerful looking foolish next to a common bird. Seeing that old joke travel around the world on a pop-music cartoon makes me unreasonably happy.

The 12-inch Derpy Squishmallow is the official Jazwares version, rated 3+ according to The Toy Book, which reported preorders in December 2025 and shipping from May 2026. An 8-inch Sussie, hat included, came out alongside him. Keep your expectations in the right shape: he is squashed into the round Squishmallows body, not sculpted like the film's lanky tiger. Derpy plush comes in several sizes and from many sellers, so confirm the 12-inch Original listing and the official Squishmallows branding before you check out. For a young fan, or an adult who sang "Golden" in the car more than once this year, it's a history lesson you can sleep on.

For the Dog Who Already Tilts Its Head Like Grogu: Fun Costumes' Grogu Pet Costume

The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) – Official Trailer, Star Wars · Watch on YouTube

Here is the detail that made me laugh out loud: Grogu was designed by watching dogs. Describing the character to Rebecca Keegan at The Hollywood Reporter in 2019, Jon Favreau said, "The ears, the posture, the cocking of the head, with a dog, a lot of expression comes from that." Part of the job, he added, was "making something that felt like a pet that you had a connection with." The same story credits a Christian Alzmann concept drawing of the creature "clad in a worn little makeshift garment" with settling the look, and Favreau wanted it "a little weird," not "a straight-up Disney baby."

So a Grogu costume for a dog is less a disguise than a homecoming. Fun Costumes' officially licensed two-piece set, as HalloweenCostumes.com lists it, is a plush Minky robe with a sherpa collar standing in for that hand-me-down garment, plus a headpiece whose foam-backed green ears stay up and fasten under the chin. It runs from Small to XL, and the XL is cut for a dog of 80 to 100 pounds, which is funny when you remember Grogu rides around in a hover-pram. The Mandalorian and Grogu reached theaters in May and, as Engadget reported, has been on Disney+ since September 2, so this is the year the family dog can be in the holiday photo as the film's co-star.

Honest caveats. The costume is new and has only a handful of ratings, and the retailer marks it non-returnable once opened, so measure the dog against the size chart before you buy. Owners of Fun's simpler Grogu hoodie say dogs accept a jacket far more easily than anything strapped to the head, which points to the likely story here: the robe stays on, the ears last exactly as long as the photo. Give it to the Star Wars household whose dog already does the head tilt every time the doorbell rings.

One Scene to Watch Before You Wrap

If you give the T. rex, put Jurassic Park on first and wait for the last minutes in the visitor center. As No Film School points out, the skeleton still falls in the finished film, only now it comes down as part of the escape that Spielberg rewrote on set.
