For a generation of readers, the eight Warner Bros. films were Harry Potter. Now HBO is starting over with a far bigger canvas: a television series that aims to adapt each of J.K. Rowling's seven novels as its own season. The first, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, premieres on Christmas Day, December 25, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max. That is earlier than the 2027 window that had previously been announced.
What It Is
HBO has pitched the show as a faithful adaptation of the books, and the season-per-book structure is the point. The films had to cut subplots, minor characters and much of the slow-burn texture of school life to fit two and a half hours; a season of television has room for all of it. Rowling is an executive producer.
Who Is Making It
The showrunner and an executive producer is Francesca Gardiner, a writer and producer on Succession. Mark Mylod, who directed many of Succession's most celebrated episodes and the film The Menu, is an executive producer and directs episodes of the series.
Who Is In It
After an open casting call that, by the producers' own account, drew tens of thousands of children, the three leads are newcomers:
- Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter
- Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger
- Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley
The adults are a deep bench of stage and screen actors:
- John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
- Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
- Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
- Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
Why It Is So Anticipated
It is the most famous children's book series of its era, given the long-form prestige-TV treatment by people who made one of HBO's defining dramas. It is also a genuine gamble: the original films are still beloved, and every casting choice has been debated online since the first announcements. The two trailers have been viewed tens of millions of times on the official Harry Potter YouTube channel alone, and the decision to premiere on Christmas Day tells you HBO sees this as an event.
The Trailers
HBO released a first teaser on March 25, 2026, and a second, longer teaser trailer on September 2, 2026. Both are embedded on this page and both come from the official Harry Potter channel.
What We Do Not Know Yet
HBO has not confirmed, in the sources we checked, how many episodes the first season will have or whether they will drop weekly or all at once. We will update this post when that is announced.
Should You Wait for It?
Yes, especially if you have young viewers in the house who have never read the books. A Christmas Day premiere, a season-long first year at Hogwarts and a story designed to grow up with its audience, one book at a time, is about as good a family viewing plan as television offers.
