Here's the first thing to know about the Festival de Cannes: you cannot simply buy a ticket. The world's most famous film festival is, at heart, a professional event, and screenings in the Palais run on accreditation and invitation.

Here's the second thing: that doesn't mean the public is shut out. There are three real, official routes for film lovers, and with the 80th edition scheduled for Tuesday, May 11 to Saturday, May 22, 2027, this is the year to learn them. The Official Selection will be announced in April 2027, but the application windows open well before that.

Route 1: Cannes Cinéphiles accreditation

What it is. Run by the Cannes Cinéma association with the City of Cannes, the Cinéphiles accreditation gives about 3,000 dedicated film lovers free access to screenings of films from the festival's selections. Screenings take place at Cannes Cinéma venues (Théâtre La Licorne, Studio 13, Le Raimu and Théâtre Alexandre III) and, under conditions, at the Palais des Festivals, Théâtre Croisette, Espace Miramar and the Cinéum.

Who can apply. Adults (18+) in one of these groups:

  • Film students in higher-education film or audiovisual programs (third-year undergraduates and above get priority)
  • Cinema subscribers: regular moviegoers who can prove it with a subscription or loyalty card at least a year old, plus an attendance history
  • Members of cinema associations that program screenings year-round
  • School groups of film-specialty high school students aged 16+, with teachers

What you need. A double-sided ID, a recent passport-style photo, a cover letter about your motivation (the festival calls it "a love letter to cinema"), plus the proof for your category.

When and how much. In the 2026 cycle, applications opened and closed in February and were processed in March, exclusively through the festival's online portal. There was an environmental contribution of €24. Late or incomplete applications were rejected automatically. Expect the 2027 window to be announced around the start of the year.

Route 2: "3 Days in Cannes" (Trois jours à Cannes)

What it is. A festival programme for film lovers aged 18 to 28, giving three days of access to the Official Selection: Competition, Out of Competition, Special Screenings, Un Certain Regard, Cannes Classics and Cinéma de la Plage. Screenings take place at the Cinéum and the Palais des Festivals, plus a dedicated programme at the Les Arcades cinema.

How it works. In 2026 there were three sessions of three days. Applications were submitted through the online accreditation portal between February 2 and March 15, 2026, with ID, a photo and, again, a love letter to cinema. Badges were collected at the Palais in Cannes.

For 2027, registration for the 80th edition has not opened yet. If you're under 29, put a reminder in your calendar for late January.

Route 3: Cinéma de la Plage

Every evening during the festival, Cannes holds free open-air screenings on Plage Macé, the beach in front of the Croisette. According to the Cannes tourist office, they're free and first-come, first-served. Arrive early on nights when filmmakers or guests are expected.

Step by step: applying for 2027

  1. Pick your route. Under 29 and passionate? Try 3 Days in Cannes. Film student, cinema subscriber or association member? Try Cinéphiles. Either way, do the beach.
  2. Gather documents now. Ask your cinema for an attendance statement, get a recent ID photo, and request a student certificate if relevant.
  3. Write your love letter early. It's the one part of the application that's genuinely yours. Be specific about the films and experiences that made you love cinema.
  4. Watch the official accreditation page on festival-cannes.com from January, and apply through the official portal only. Email or postal applications are not accepted.
  5. Book lodging early. Cannes during the festival is famously expensive, and an accreditation is not a guaranteed approval, so choose refundable bookings.

Insider tips

  • Accreditation is not an entitlement. Places are limited and selective. Apply on time, with every document.
  • Read the rules that come with your badge. Each accreditation lists exactly which venues and sections it covers, so plan your days around them before you arrive.
  • Collect your badge promptly. In 2026, Cinéphiles badges were collected on set days at the Gare Maritime, so check the 2027 pick-up dates before booking travel.
  • Combine routes. A 3 Days badge in the daytime and a beach screening at night is an unbeatable Cannes day.

The 80th Festival de Cannes will be a landmark year. You won't walk in off the street, but with a well-timed application and a heartfelt letter, you may well walk in.
